The Cycling Participation Survey is a biennial report that shows cycling trends across Australia.
Below is a summary of some of these trends over the past couple of years and the positive impact COVID has had.
Impacts of Covid
- Cycling participation went from 35% in 2019 to 44.3% in 2021
Gender and age
- 7% increase in males, 3% increase in females.
- 30 – 49-year-olds represent the highest increase, going from 34.6% to 40.7%
State comparisons
- Northern Territory has the highest numbers with 49.6% participants in the last year
- Unfortunately, NSW has the lowest numbers with 32.8% participants in the last year
NSW
- However, NSW numbers have risen over the past two years
- Sydney numbers have increased 8% in the last two years.
- This increase is a result of the pandemic as well as an increase in accessible cycle ways.
